Trains de-railing because the switchman neglected to throw a switch? Too much wire to run to the switch mechanism? Operating current from O-22 non-derailing function deteriorating your wheels and track rails?

Three-Rail Innovations' Two Relay Controller can be connected to perform a non-derailing function for any electrically operated track switch.

The following drawing shows the 2RC configured for non-derailing operation of a solenoid-type track switch.

Connections are wired as follows:

• The 2RC is powered with a 12 - 14 volt transformer.
• The isolated outside-rail track blocks are powered from track center- rail power connected to the "B" terminals of both outside-rail inputs. (The 2RC outside-rail inputs can also be powered with a separate transformer, 8 - 20 volts.)
• The isolated outside-rail track blocks are connected to Input 1-A (curved) and Input 2-A (straight) terminals.
• The track switch is operated by activating a relay to connect either the "curved" or "straight" post to track common. Track common is connected to the C (Common) terminals of both relays.
  • The NO (Normally Open) terminal for Relay-1 is connected to the "curved" track switch post.
  • The NO (Normally Open) terminal for Relay-2 is connected to the "straight" track switch post.

Two jumpers are installed configuring the 2RC controller for the "Only-One-ON" feature set, "One-Time-ON" feature, 3 second ON time, Relay-1 and Relay-2 operate in "separate" mode.

• A train in isolated outside-rail track block "C" will activate the switch for the "curved" route for three seconds.
• A train in isolated outside-rail track block "S" will move the switch for the "straight" route for three seconds.

Limiting track switch activation time to three seconds can be most useful for track switches that can only be powered from track/center-rail power: the affect of activating the switch on train power is minimized. Track switches that have a non-derailing feature that is always on when the train is over the switch can be modified to only activate the switch for 3 seconds. The activation time can be increased if the switches are a little sluggish.
