K 'n G Railplex -- Train Show Pictures -- First Showing CLOSE

The K 'n G Railplex was first shown at the RMD TCA August 2002 train show.

The layout was a little bare of decoration but successfully demonstrated running multiple trains on the same track. The following picture was taken of the first test run, just after the layout was assembled. (The show hasn't opened yet.)

There are six block signals, all operating to show if following track blocks are clear for an approaching train.

Five trains are running for the test. They ran great!

The following picture is a view from the "operator" side, showing the power center. It weighs over 200 pounds.

The show has just opened and the layout has caught the attention of two boys. They are probably waiting for trains on the same track to crash; they never do.

Automatic operation of the track switches has caught the attention of the boy in the following picture. The block signals are also changing as trains move into following blocks. With six trains running, there are always one or two in any given area, making train watching interesting.

The unconnected track switch legs are for the "work" loop, which wasn't implemented for the first showing.

The show is going full blast and crowds have started to gather.

We have just recovered from a disaster! One of the brand new Lionel O-72 track switches failed with a broken activator pin. (In the foreground of the picture.) We didn't bring any spares so had to go out on the show floor and buy one. People gathered to watch the replacement process.

Over time, more of the new track switches failed and we replaced them with pre-war 711 O-72 track switches. None of pre-war track switches have failed.
